SenzTx — zirconia versus electrochemical oxygen

Process Sensing Technologies SenzTx comes in zirconia and electrochemical oxygen technologies, which may differ markedly in expected gas temperature, maintenance, measuring range and sensor lifetime. Select on actual process composition and whether ppm-level trace oxygen or percent oxygen is needed. Confirm the calibration and sample-handling setup before choosing the 4–20 mA/Modbus option. Do not apply the electrochemical cell lifetime or zirconia temperature limits to every SenzTx suffix.

ParameterManufacturer specificationPractical limitation
Sensor technology choicesZirconia (ZR) or electrochemical (EC) oxygen elementEC is specifically useful for background gases containing hydrocarbons that may be unsuitable for hot zirconia sensing.
ZR ranges0–1000 ppm, 0–1%, 0–25% or 0–96% O₂ family optionsHardware range/technology is order-code dependent.
EC ranges0–1000 ppm or 0–25% O₂ per original data sheetDo not assign the 0–96% ZR range or ZR lifespan to electrochemical version.
Accuracy / response±2% of reading or 2 ppm O₂ (at calibrated conditions); T90 less than 10 sSample flow, pressure and gas composition can change practical response.
Supply / communications24 V DC, ≤50 mA; 4–20 mA analog plus RS485 ModbusUse OEM M12 pin assignment and permitted bus loading.
Environment by technologyZR −20…+50 °C; EC 0…+45 °C; 900–1100 mbar absoluteDifferent technology options have nonidentical ambient conditions.
Expected consumable life2019 data table: ZR 3–5 years; EC ~1 year, depending on useSensor life is not guaranteed indefinitely despite broad family marketing.
Body / process connectionIP66 anodized aluminum, 47 mm diameter, 120–140 mm length; KF40 flange, flowthrough or orificeSpecify true sample-line and chamber compatibility.

System integration and commissioning

The original PST data sheet contrasts non-depleting hot zirconia electrochemistry with consumable EC measurement. It reports ZR longer-term durability while the EC model is more suitable for certain hydrocarbon backgrounds. Do not present any SenzTx as a certified personal oxygen deficiency monitor; it is an OEM industrial process transmitter. At commissioning, verify the 4 mA and 20 mA readings correspond to the chosen ppm or %O₂ scale, identify sensor technology, test Modbus fault paths and document sample pressure/flow control. The older manufacturer revision is clearly labelled; current part-number/certificate and availability need checking for procurement.
