Transmitters / Air Velocity Transmitters / Buying Guide

How to Choose Air Velocity Transmitters: Buying Guide

Specify duct geometry, velocity profile and air temperature before selecting a probe. This guide helps technicians, consultants and buyers compare installed measurement transmitters without confusing them with sensing components.

Before buying: Write down the process variable, normal and maximum range, installation site, BMS communication requirements and commissioning responsibilities.

1. Define Measurement Duty

Compare thermal anemometry, differential-pressure pitot and vane technologies. Match the manufacturer’s specified operating conditions, required enclosure and exact product or order variant. Request installation diagrams and current selection sheets to confirm the chosen configuration.

2. Compare Operating Range

Verify the usable velocity range and low-flow accuracy. Match the manufacturer’s specified operating conditions, required enclosure and exact product or order variant. Request installation diagrams and current selection sheets to confirm the chosen configuration.

3. Check Accuracy and Environmental Conditions

Assess duct turbulence, temperature/humidity compensation and probe insertion depth. Match the manufacturer’s specified operating conditions, required enclosure and exact product or order variant. Request installation diagrams and current selection sheets to confirm the chosen configuration.

4. Electrical Outputs and BMS Integration

Match analog scaling, Modbus outputs and the building management system. Match the manufacturer’s specified operating conditions, required enclosure and exact product or order variant. Request installation diagrams and current selection sheets to confirm the chosen configuration.

5. Installation and Commissioning

Consider dirt accumulation, orientation and periodic calibration access. Match the manufacturer’s specified operating conditions, required enclosure and exact product or order variant. Request installation diagrams and current selection sheets to confirm the chosen configuration.

6. Calibration, Maintenance and Lifetime

Check whether the reading is local velocity or properly calculated volumetric flow. Match the manufacturer’s specified operating conditions, required enclosure and exact product or order variant. Request installation diagrams and current selection sheets to confirm the chosen configuration.

7. Common Errors to Avoid

Critical distinction: A single-point probe in a nonuniform duct does not automatically indicate total airflow. Confirm wiring, supply voltage, output scaling and installation requirements with a qualified technician. Digital bus support in a product family does not mean every ordered version has that interface.

  • Never treat a sensor IC as a complete factory-calibrated wall or duct transmitter.
  • Do not confuse nominal range, accuracy, resolution and response time.
  • Do not specify one communication protocol without checking controller integration and cabling.
  • Avoid overlooking calibration gas, tubing, probes or accessories that are sold separately.

8. Buying Checklist

  1. Record application, units and range.
  2. Verify media, temperature, humidity and enclosure protection.
  3. Compare accuracy at actual operating point and lifecycle drift.
  4. Select mounting geometry and mechanical process connection.
  5. Verify wiring, 24 V supply, output and BMS registers.
  6. Check startup, fault signal, alarm and recalibration requirements.
  7. Check accessories, manufacturer service support and region-specific availability.
  8. Request the exact datasheet and commissioning documentation.
