Exact chip package, optical filter, field of view and temperature range require the manufacturer’s current part-number datasheet.
Pirani vacuum versus pyroelectric infrared
Heimann Pirani vacuum sensors and pyroelectric IR detectors measure different physical quantities and should not be listed as interchangeable sensors. A Pirani gauge requires gas-specific pressure calibration and suitable electronics; a pyroelectric detector responds to modulated radiation through a chosen optical filter. The current picture represents an HVS Pirani model only. Separate model sheets are needed for each family’s performance, packaging and application.
Heimann HVS Pirani vacuum sensors: two pressure ranges
| Option / criterion | Original maker technical detail | Design implication |
|---|---|---|
| HVS 04 Pirani | 1000 mbar atmospheric down to 10⁻³ mbar; 1.0×1.0 mm sensor chip; TO-39 | Useful from rough vacuum towards medium vacuum; response depends on gas-specific thermal conduction. |
| HVS 03k Pirani | 10 mbar down to 10⁻⁵ mbar; 4.0×4.0 mm chip, TO-39 | Use for a deeper vacuum range where HVS 04 loses sensitivity. |
| HVS 03k + 04 dual | TO-8 double chip spans 1000 mbar down to 10⁻⁵ mbar | Two independent elements/response regimes; not a single flat percentage accuracy over five decades. |
| Electrical / environment | 2 V stated supply for HVS chips; operating −20…+120°C, storage −40…+120°C | Requires heated-element/reference calibration and host front-end for vacuum response. |
| Pyroelectric detectors | Separate radiation-sensing technology, not Pirani pressure sensing | A pyroelectric device responds to varying infrared flux; exact pyroelectric model ratings are not assigned here without an OEM specific sheet. |
Selection, integration and qualification
A Pirani vacuum gauge measures thermally conductive gas pressure and is gas-composition dependent: air calibration is not universally valid for He/H₂/CO₂. The photograph depicts an HVS Pirani model only; the page also mentions pyroelectric IR families, which need separate detector-specific documentation. This is not a gauge for HVAC filter differential pressure.
