Mulberry Duo — two gases from one assembly
The Mulberry Duo is described as a methane and carbon-dioxide NDIR measurement module. A host must identify the two separate gas values, their calibration and units, and the required digital frame format before using the data for equipment control. Methane safety alarms and CO₂ concentration monitoring serve different hazard/control decisions; do not share one threshold or treat simultaneous dual-gas operation as identical to combining two stand-alone modules. Confirm exact spectral channels and suffix with the maker.
Mulberry Duo — simultaneous CH₄ and CO₂ in one NDIR unit: original-maker engineering review
The current eLichens gas-sensor product range distinguishes 1-Series versus 4-Series hardware, gas-specific calibration and certificate scope. Family descriptions do not establish every exact ordered module’s performance or complete-device approval.
| Feature | Manufacturer basis | Engineering distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Gas channels | Dedicated CH₄ and CO₂ NDIR measurements in one 4-Series assembly | Not a single methane channel with a derived ‘equivalent CO₂’ output. |
| Electrical connection | Digital UART with integrated temperature compensation | Host application must parse both independent concentration channels and faults. |
| Power | Manufacturer states <2 mW for Mulberry Duo | This is model-specific; not the same as the Bilberry 5S 75 µW claim. |
| Deployment formats | Portable or fixed gas detection instruments | Integration requires mechanical diffusion opening and channel-specific alarm logic. |
| Protection classification | Maker declares intrinsically safe ATEX and IECEx Zone 0 for Mulberry Duo | Complete instrument’s energy limits, circuit parameters and nameplate still need validation. |
| Sensor basis | Low-power micro-source and proprietary multi-channel NDIR | Separate gas response/detection limits must come from order-specific Duo datasheet. |
| Market introduction | Official launch 16 July 2026 for first eLichens dual-gas Mulberry | Do not merge this new 2026 hardware with older standalone Mulberry CO₂ or CH₄ modules. |
Integration and safety assessment
The dual-channel approach may help distinguish environmental CO₂ backgrounds from methane gas leaks in biogas or utilities, but each channel needs independent calibration gases, units and alarm settings. CO₂ ppm/percent volume is not a proxy for combustible %LEL and does not alone prove a methane release. For hazardous area designs, inspect the Duo-specific entity parameters and approved enclosure/host before claiming that a complete device is Zone 0 approved. Test channel faults separately and avoid propagating one sensor’s stale gas value as a healthy value for both.
