Figaro CDM7160 — reference-wavelength NDIR for 24/7 occupancy — model evidence and engineering selection

Current original manufacturer information differentiates optical design, gas span, data interfaces, revision-specific power and calibration assumptions.

CharacteristicSource-backed detailSelection consequence
Optical principleSingle IR source with two separate wavelength-filtered detector elementsOne channel reads CO₂-absorbing light; second reference channel compensates source/intensity drift.
Constant-occupancy designTwo-wavelength reference avoids relying exclusively on vacant-room 400ppm ABC correctionImportant in hospitals, stores and offices occupied day and night.
Electrical outputDigital UART or short-range I²C to host microcontrollerI²C is a short-board bus; do not directly wire to distant BAS controller.
Power60mA peak and ~10mA average in maker overviewRegulator needs peak headroom; consumption is greater than low-power Senseair S12.
Physical thickness7.5mm low-profile packageAssembly/mounting differs from a tall flow-through optical module.
CalibrationFigaro describes factory calibration to known standard CO₂ gasActual accuracy/performance band still needs product model-specific current specification.
ApplicationsContinuous ventilation / BEMS/HEMS, hospitals and librariesA building CO₂ sensor is not an independent personal confined-space detector.

Firmware, operating environment and calibration

This model’s central engineering distinction is optical reference compensation. Figaro explicitly warns that a single-wavelength sensor using automatic 400ppm correction can drift when a room is never unoccupied, while CDM7160 compares two filtered wavelengths from one source. Do not mistakenly describe it as having two independent IR emitters. Integrators still need pressure/temperature compensation, UART/I²C host design and reference gas calibration verification. The shorter 7.5mm package suits thin wall panels, but proximity to electronics/heat and diffusion opening can bias readings. The source feature page supplies the principle and current/power evidence; detailed product accuracy/order revisions should be independently checked before specification.
