Type 240 — vortex liquid flow in heat pumps
Huba Control Type 240 uses vortex shedding to measure liquid flow and is shown with an R290-ready example variant. R290 readiness of one model/application must not be generalized to every 240 sensor or interpreted as a stand-alone ATEX certificate. Verify the actual wetted polymer, medium, allowable pressure/temperature and output option; a vortical liquid sensor does not measure ventilation airflow. Size selection should keep normal flow inside the manufacturer’s calibrated bore/range.
Huba Type 240 — quantitative liquid-flow selection and electrical integration
Type 240 uses a Kármán vortex-shedding principle for non-freezing liquids (drinking water, heating-water mixtures and specified glycols). It is not a pitot-type air-velocity probe and should not be presented as a general ventilation-flow sensor. Huba currently lists the following model-family parameters:
| Parameter | Current official 240 range | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal diameter / volume flow | DN 6/8/10/15/20/25; family 0.5–150 L/min | Full-scale accuracy and pipe-loss depend on ordered nominal size; never use 150 L/min for every diameter. |
| Low-flow accuracy (water) | ±1% of measuring-range end value below 50% FS | Accuracy stated as full scale can be a larger percentage of reading at low flow. |
| High-flow accuracy (water) | ±2% of measured value above 50% FS; repeatability ±0.5% | Switches to a reading-referenced error class; do not present all points as ±1% of reading. |
| Dynamics | 300 ms switch-on delay (T90); 800 ms response (T90) | Start-up delay and dynamic flow step response are separate quantities. |
| Electrical | 8–33 VDC; 4–20 mA liquid-flow output; M12 A-coded connection; <21mA current consumption; IP65 | Use correct loop receiver/burden and connector wiring; supply is not 3.3 V I²C and no generic RS485 is asserted. |
| Pressure / temperature | ≤16 bar system at media ≤90°C; pressure pulse up to 100 bar at 90°C; recommended minimum pressure 1 bar; media −15…+125°C nonfreezing | Transient impact rating does not mean 100 bar continuous operating. |
| Optional fluid temperature | PT1000 Class B; ±0.3 K ±0.005 × |ΔT| relative to 0°C | Confirm whether selected variant actually has temperature measurement and the corresponding pin arrangement. |
Material and regulatory boundaries
Wetted PPSU paddle, glass-fibre PPS housing and EPDM/FKM seal options require water/glycol chemistry compatibility checks. Huba lists WRAS/ACS/UBA drinking-water approvals, UL 61010-1 and R290 Ready / VDE mark to EN IEC 60335-2-40 for the stated applicable heat-pump arrangement. These are not blanket ATEX/IECEx hazardous-location approvals, refrigerant-gas flow certification or proof that every ordering suffix is identically certified. Review exact medium, certificate annex and order code.
