FDF242-EX — intrinsic-safety installation chain

FDF242-EX is the hazardous-area version of Siemens’ addressable infrared flame sensor, marketed for specified explosive gas zones with ATEX/IECEx approvals. The exact certificate, intrinsic-safety barrier, approved loop topology, cable parameters and field mounting assembly must be reviewed together before deployment. Optical flame-detection coverage and false alarm response still require engineering verification, while the ordinary FDF242 must not be substituted as an Ex unit.

FDF242-EX — Zone-rated detection needs its Ex loop

Siemens describes FDF242-EX as the hazardous-area version of its addressable IR flame detector. The official data identify the communication bus as FDnet-Ex/C-NET-Ex rather than the ordinary FDnet/C-NET of FDF242. Its specified EN 54-10 detection classes are Class 1 up to 25 m and Class 2 up to 17 m, with an approximately 90° horizontal and vertical field of view under Siemens test conditions.

Selecting the Ex detector is not sufficient on its own: review the precise certificate, intrinsic-safety isolation/barrier, allowed loop voltage/current and capacitance/inductance, field wiring and accessory requirements together. Confirm the permitted Zones 0/1/2, applicable gas group and approval markings from the actual FDF242-EX nameplate and Siemens instructions. A regular FDF242, external alarm indicator or unapproved loop supply cannot be substituted without safety engineering.
