Cranberry R32 — refrigerant-specific selection
Cranberry R32 is a refrigerant-detection NDIR variant, not a calibrated CH₄ or CO₂ module simply because the same package name is used. HVAC leak-protection designs must match the specified R32 concentration range, response time, allowable temperature, humidity and host diagnostic state. Place the module where leaked refrigerant can reach the sensing path without airflow short-circuiting. Installation, fan shutdown and whole appliance leak-alarm certification follow the applicable HVAC safety requirements rather than the sensor’s marketing classification alone.
Cranberry R32 — refrigerant-specific infrared leakage detection: original-maker engineering review
The current eLichens gas-sensor product range distinguishes 1-Series versus 4-Series hardware, gas-specific calibration and certificate scope. Family descriptions do not establish every exact ordered module’s performance or complete-device approval.
| Feature | Manufacturer basis | Engineering distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Target substance | R32 (difluoromethane) refrigerant NDIR signature | Do not swap an R32 module with a CH₄ methane sensor merely because both are combustible gases. |
| Mechanical/electrical | 1-Series Cranberry miniature optical format, digital UART | Separate PCB carrier from Mulberry 4-Series, verify pin and firmware. |
| Measurement type | R32 concentration rather than CO₂ ppm or methane %LEL | Check whether the exact ordered revision reports percent volume, ppm or %LFL and map the controller. |
| Detection response | Manufacturer Cranberry platform supports twice-per-second updates | Receiver sampling rate does not guarantee leak detection within 0.5 seconds. |
| Safety / standards | R32 is an A2L-class refrigerant; manufacturer advertises certified Cranberry family variants | Equipment-level A2L refrigerant mitigation and UL/IEC requirements are separate from the sensor’s component approvals. |
| Environmental limitations | Optical window contamination, refrigerant flow and enclosure placement need application review | Sensor output alone cannot provide complete HVAC leak mitigation. |
| Power and diagnostics | Battery-efficient optical NDIR platform with model-dependent supply | Monitor serial loss, startup and out-of-range responses with fail-safe ventilation outputs. |
Integration and safety assessment
R32 concentration sensing is relevant to heat pumps/air conditioning, where a monitored leak may require shutting down compressor operation and starting mechanical ventilation. Place sensors based on refrigerant dispersion, equipment design and manufacturer installation instructions, not on methane ceiling placement rules. The detector’s sensitivity, alarm threshold, zone and Ex suitability must be checked against the R32-specific certified datasheet and applicable system standard; component ATEX/IECEx status is not equivalent to a fully compliant A2L HVAC leak detection system.
